Neighbors reacted to a dramatic rescue that was caught on body cam footage that shows police saving a group of people and a young girl from a house fire in Mount Vernon on Sunday.
Mount Vernon police said they learned about the fire at 121 North Macquesten Parkway around 2:20 Sunday morning.
When they arrived, officers said they found a woman and young girl screaming from a window on the second floor.
Officers said they were met with heavy smoke and flames when they first tried to get to them.
They said the conditions forced them to leave and to climb on top of the porch.
This is where they said they got the girl and handed her off to another officer, so she could be escorted away.
Officials said the officers then went onto the roof to remove four other people.
Barry Crumbley lives near the house and said he was the one that notified first responders about the fire.
"I was like, 'Yo, there's babies in the house. Yeah, it's a fire, but there's babies in the house'. I kept emphasizing that," Crumbley said.
Officials said all of the evacuees are safe and are receiving housing assistance.
