News 12 is pressing authorities for answers after witness video surfaced showing the aftermath of a shooting in Middletown early Sunday morning.
The video shows flashing police lights, crime scene tape and evidence markers on the street near the intersection of Railroad Avenue and East Main - just steps from several late-night bars and restaurants.
News 12 learned about the incident on Tuesday and has reached out to both Middletown police and the city mayor multiple times for information. As of Thursday evening, no response has been provided.
Orenzo Charles, a former director of SNUG in Newburgh and a survivor of gun violence, recorded the aftermath and contacted News 12 after he says no public statements were made about the shooting.
“It was really late at night. I just happened to be outside in my office parking lot ‘cause I work late,” said Charles, who added that he initially thought the scene might have been a car accident. “Then when you get closer it was like, 'oh shoot, those are shell casings' - not one, not two, a whole bunch.”
Charles says he believes the public deserves transparency.
“I get investigating is investigating, but the public needs to know from the police what’s going on. Everybody’s being quiet about it. It’s a little concerning,” he said.
Nearby business owner Josette Longstreet, who owns The Switch Inn, says police came to her door shortly after closing.
“It had nothing to do with us,” she said. “The cops actually knocked on our closed door to ask us if we knew anything and we said no.”
Charles says he’s relieved no one was hurt but wants accountability from local leadership.
“It’s unfortunate. I’m just glad nobody got hurt,” he said.
