Health officials in Westchester County have issued a warning after 37 cases of Legionnaires' disease were reported this season.

Two people have died from the illness, which is a serious form of pneumonia caused by bacteria that grows in warm, standing water.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the bacteria can be found in places like cooling towers, hot tubs, shower heads, and faucets.

Westchester County Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler urges anyone with flu-like symptoms — including fever, cough, shortness of breath, muscle aches, or headaches — to seek medical attention.

Legionnaires' disease is not contagious. It is most commonly contracted by breathing in mist that contains the bacteria.
