Brooklyn is closing out the summer with a music festival and one of the Caribbean's biggest stars is set to headline the main show.
Machel Montano, known as the “King of Soca” is set to headline Planet Brooklyn. The two-day festival celebrates the unique culture the borough represents, a special moment for Montano who made history in 2022 as the first soca artist to sell out Barclays Center.
"Caribbean culture in Brooklyn, this is where we really melted and come together all the islands," said Montano. "A show like this is exciting to celebrate this festival with that name."
This is the very first time Planet Brooklyn is taking place.
"Brooklyn is the center of global culture and we wanted to celebrate that…before the summer is over," said Dejuan Wilson, chief products and experiences officer at BSE Global.
Brooklyn's own father and son DJ duo, St. James Joy, is also excited to be a part of the festival’s free block party.
“I'm going to play a little bit of everything," said Chad Vill. "A little bit of hip-hop R&B, some Afrobeats, some ampiano, some funk."
"I never thought it would happen," said his father Jo Vil. "But it did happen and we're proud to be part of it."
Planet Brooklyn kicks off Saturday afternoon ending with the big concert Sunday night.
