A new school bus safety program has been launched in White Plains, where more than 100 buses are now equipped with artificial intelligence-powered stop-arm cameras.
"The cameras are excellent," says White Plains parent Gita Paeiz.
The cameras are designed to catch drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses.
It's a problem across the entire state of New York, according to law enforcement officials.
"The most important thing we can do is be safe on the roads. In particular, that we're stopping for school buses," says White Plains Schools Superintendent Dr. Joseph Ricca.
For the first 30 days, violators will receive warnings instead of tickets.
Once that's over, anyone who is caught breaking the law could get a $250 ticket. Each potential violation is reviewed and approved by trained city staff before a citation is issued, according to BusPatrol.
The city partnered with the White Plains City School District and safety technology company BusPatrol to roll out the program.
"Each and every one of them was installed with a series of cameras that are programed to capture license plates for when a car passes a bus that has been stopped when a child is getting off or on," says senior vice president of BusPatrol, Ryan Monell.
Parents are applauding the cameras and hope they help crack down on drivers who are not following the law.
