Meagan Rabinovich starts her day making another custom piece of jewelry, perfecting its pieces to make it the next addition to her shop, Magi NYC.
" I always liked creating something that was like, 'It's only mine. You can't have it, it's a one-of-one original,'" she said.
Rabinovich's love of jewelry-making first began when she was a high school student in Brooklyn, but as she grew up, she realized it was more than just a hobby.
"It kind of started with my friends asking me to make them a bracelet or a necklace to go with their outfit [for] school," she explained. "I just really liked seeing people's faces when they would wear the jewelry. Then fast forward...I switched my major like five times freshman year in college, and I was like, 'I have no idea like what is going on.' I would go to class, rush my classes and [then] just go to making jewelry. It was the only thing that I wanted to do... [Eventually,] I met my boyfriend, and he was like, ‘You should try selling [your pieces].’ So, I went to do my first market up in Cold Spring and that genuinely was it. After that, I dropped out and continued to do the jewelry thing, and that has been like my biggest motivation since."
From there, Rabinovich officially launched Magi NYC, selling custom pieces of jewelry that soon took hold in the lower Hudson Valley.
"When I came up here to do markets in Cold Spring, Katonah and Pleasantville, [I noticed] everyone [was] very original," she said. "I [didn't] see anyone around here wearing the same trendy outfit, as you would in the city... So, I think when I came to do my markets, my necklaces were their own thing...I didn't expect this many people to like what I did, because to me, I've been making it forever."
As she started making more appearances at local markets, Rabinovich realized she found a home in the Hudson Valley, and decided to start creating pieces inspired by residents in the region.
"I usually get a lot of inspiration from the people that I meet at markets," she explained. "Let's say someone buys something. I'll take their name down, ask like a little story and then I'll name my next necklace after the person...and it just feels so good. The community is another reason why I really love doing this because it really brings people together."
With her business continuing to grow, Rabinovich hopes to continue expanding her role in the community that has already embraced her as one of their own.
"The goal for me would be to have my own store right on the strip of Katonah," she said. "I want to be a main part of the community...and just be the go-to spot for people to go when they need a gift...I want to give people the feeling that I get when I walk into someone's cute store...and [I'm] like, 'Oh, I got this from this cute little store.'"
